NERVOUS SYSTEM REGULATION:IS YOUR HEALTHY ROUTINE BECOMING CONTROL?

Sometimes what begins as self-care can quietly turn into control. A reflection on discipline, breath, and turning to trust again.

Ocean waves representing nervous system regulation, conscius breathing and mindful movement

"SOMETIMES THE BODY WHISPERS LONG BEFORE THE MIND UNDERSTANDS"

Recently, I started teaching yoga again, and being back on the mat with my students reminded me why I love this 'work'. But it also made me reflect on something deeper.

I noticed how easily a healthy routine can become something we hold onto too tightly.

I've always loved structure-waking up early, moving my body, following simple rituals.Discipline has supported me through many phases of life.

But over time, I realised something important.

EVEN HEALTHY ROUTINES CAN BECOME A FORM OF CONTROL.

Not because discipline is wrong, but because it can stop being a choice and become something we depend on to feel safe.

WHEN SELF-CARE BECOMES PRESSURE

Have you ever felt guilty for skipping your yoga practice, your walk or meditation?

At first these habits feel freeing. Then slowly, they can create pressure.

'If I don't do this I feel off'

When that happens,I ask myself:

Am I CHOOSING THIS BECAUSE IT NOURISHES ME,OR BECAUSE I'm afraid not to?

And more ...this can be applied to almost everything in life: food, sport, shopping, duties ,relationships etc.

THE NEED FOR SAFETY

During stressful times,we often cling more tightly to routines.

It is not just discipline-it's the nervous system seeking stability.

Routines can be supportive anchors.

But they become limiting when they stop us from listening to our bodies.

WHAT THE OCEAN TEACHES

The Ocean doesn't force -it adapts

It moves, changes and flows without losing itself.

This is what I'm reminded of in my practice.

Resilience isn't rigidity

it's the ability to adapt.

RETURNING TO THE BREATH FOR NERVOUS SYSTEM REGULATION

As an Odaka yoga teacher when the body feels rigid come back to the flow.

Return to the breath: not to fix everything ,but to create space.

Space to pause,listen and choose.

Something healing begins not by doing more, but by softening.

Perhaps this is where nervous system regulation begins: not with more control, but with learning to listen.

Choosing a different kind of freedom is SAFE.

I -You can still value discipline and routine.

But you can also allow space for change.

Rest more, slow down and let go of control.

True freedom isn't having everything planned.

IT'S TRUSTING YOURSELF ENOUGH TO ADAPT.

A SMALL GIFT FOR YOU

If this resonates with your,i have created a simple 5 minute nervous system breathing practice.

It is a gentle way to pause, soften

,and reconnect-one breath at a time..

I was discussing exacly it yesterday with a colleague, another Odaka yoga teacher. We agreed that discipline can easily turn into rigidity. And that is why we love Odaka yoga so much: because it creates space instead of fill space with instructions. Thank you Federica!
